Frank's Extra Mile: A Gentleman's Story

Frank’s Extra Mile tells the story of Frank Larson, a noble, down-to-earth North Dakotan, whom customers, competitors, staff, friends and family describe as a true gentleman. With his wife Jo Andrea, Frank bought the Larson family’s first bank 50 years ago on January 1, 1969, in the farming community of Oakes, ND. The Larsons bought their second bank a year later in a nearby Ellendale, which is also an agricultural community. Today, Starion has 12 locations in North Dakota and three in Wisconsin. Bank assets have increased from $4.5 million in 1969 to more than $1.25 billion today. Starion is a high-performing financial institution with an asset growth rate of 22 percent over the last five years and enjoys a five-star rating from Baurer Financial. As well, Independent Banker magazine recognized Starion Bank as one of the “Best of the Best.” Frank build Starion on an ethos of going the extra mile for individual customers, families, farmers and other businesses. Frank treated clients and staff -in fact, the entire communities his banks serve- as family. “Frank really believes that the vitality of the community is dependent on a good community bank,” said Eric Hardmeyer, President of the Bank of North Dakota. “Banking is a very simple thing,” Frank said. “If you have a dream that you want to do something and need help, you go to the banker and borrow money to achieve your dream. I am just a facilitator.” In his vision statement for Starion’s future, Frank articulated the bank’s core value: honesty, integrity, respect, servant leadership, public service, and community engagement and commitment. These Midwestern values will continue to define Starion as future generations of Larsons take ownership of the family’s legacy.
